Our German ancestors establish 5 breweries in the Amana Colonies to serve the needs of the villagers during the early days of the communal society. The last of those breweries closed in 1884 with Iowa’s first prohibition laws. That lasted 101 years until a new brewery opened in 1989. Stop buy the Brau Haus Restaurant (German for Brew House) for a beer and a pretzel or sample the rotating taps at the Electric Thread. Great brews can be found at all our restaurants and of course, the beer is always flowing at Oktoberfest!
