Notan and the Munsell Color Wheel

This course explores the relationship between value structure and color harmony as foundational elements in creating compelling compositions. Students will examine the concept of Notan, the Japanese study of balance between black and white, and learn to integrate value harmony with color systems to achieve greater unity and impact in both still-life and landscape works.
Through the lens of the Munsell System of color organization, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how hue, value, and chroma interact to create harmony across a composition. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing value structures, applying color theory with intentionality, and strengthening compositional design to convey atmosphere and mood.
This workshop offers a combination of historical context, technical insight, and practical application using both photo reference and direct observation. Students will leave with refined tools for integrating value and color harmonies into their personal artistic practice.
