Guten Appetit: A Sampling Tour
Date: Thursday, May 23
Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Location: Amana Colonies Visitors Center
Address: 622 46th Avenue
During the communal era, 55 communal kitchens served five daily meals. Each kitchen served 10 families; 40 or so people, and prepared all the food for the residents. Meals consisted of meat, bread, and vegetables, all produced in the Colonies. The tradition continues today in our restaurants and specialty food shops. Our food isn’t fancy, so if your looking for haute cuisine, you won’t find it here! What you will find is fresh foods made like grandma made them, served in abundance.
The tour gives samples of all the great food and beverages made here in the Colonies, some reminiscent of the communal era, some new creations to whet your appetite. Either way, you will enjoy all the great samples and come to understand the rich history of the Colonies and how we preserve and grow our unique heritage.
The walking tour leaves the Visitors Center at 1 pm and lasts approximately 3 hours. Reservations are required. Call (319) 622-7622 for more details.
Cost is $25/person, must be 21 years of age to participate.
